Description
The Snakeskin Gourami is very striking in appearance it has an elongated body with long pectoral fins, the color is light yellowish brown with a dark zig-zag line running from eye to base of tail. They are known for being very vocal and make a sort of croaking sound.
They are found in rice paddies and shallow ponds in Eastern Asian countries, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.
They are peaceful fish and are ideal for beginners.
Housing
The Snakeskin Gourami can grow up to 8-10 inch in length therefore will need a large tank with plenty of swimming room. The tank should have slow water currents with a temperature of (74-82 with a ph balance of (6.0-8.0) they prefer thick vegetation, bushy plants for hiding and a dark substrate should be added to the tank.
Snakeskins possess a labyrinth organ which allows them to breathe air directly, as well as absorbing oxygen from the water through its gills into the bloodstream.
Despite these fish being large in size they are very peaceful and can be mixed with Tetras, Sharks, Loaches, Angels, and Barbs.
Feeding
When it comes to fish care the Snakeskin Gouramis are omnivores and like a diet heavy in plant matter. In the wild a large proportion of their diet is green foods therefore it is a good idea to offer vegetable pellets or fresh vegetables like blanched lettuce. They will also eat Blood worms, Brine Shrimp, Spirulina flakes, but will not eat fish fry.
