Giant DanioFish Care Description

The Giant Danio is one of the largest of the Danio family, growing up to 6 inch in length when maturity is reached. The body of the fish is a beautiful deep gold/yellow color with dark blue mottled stripes running along the elongated body. These fish look very attractive under the lights of the aquarium as their color seems to change when the light hits them.

They are native to Asia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India where they live in rivers or tropical fast flowing streams high up in the mountains; they have a lifespan of 3-5 years.

Housing

The Giant Danio will need a large tank of at least 30 gallon to give plenty of swimming room as they can grow up to 6 inch in length and as they should be purchased in groups of 2 or 3 they will take up most of the tank. The temperature of the tank should be kept at (7.2-8.1) with a ph of (6.8-7.6)

They are quite easy to keep and get along with most other fish, but can frighten smaller more timid fish with their boisterous nature and very fast movements. A tight fitting lid is a must for these fish as they can jump quite high.

Feeding

Giant Danios are Omnivores therefore will need meaty foods and vegetables in their diet; they will eat good quality flakes, brine shrimps, blanched lettuce and pellets. They are very quick to feed so check the other fish in the aquarium are getting their share.

The Rachow killifish (Nothobranchius rachovii) is a beautiful looking Killifish with a light blue body and red criss-cross markings which give the appearance of a string vest, the dorsal fin has thicker red markings and the tail is similar in pattern but with a black edging.

The Killifish live in the lakes and ponds of Africa; where they lay their eggs in the mud before the ponds evaporate in the dry season then the fish die but the eggs survive until it rains again and they then hatch, when the Killifish are fully grown they are about 2-3 inch in length and have a lifespan of 1-2  years. The Red-Striped Killifish (Aphyosemion striatum) is striking to look at with its small red spots running along the full length of its elongated body, the body color is a reflective green color and the dorsal fin has two thick red lines, the tail is covered in yellow, orange, blue and red colored markings. The Cape lopez lyretail (gold) (Aphyosemion austral) is classed as a Killifish and were quite hard to find being a specialist fish, but this particular species is now available to buy from any good aquatic shops.

These fish have a variety of lovely colored speckles on their body from bright red, yellow and metallic blue/green.  The anal and dorsal fins go to a point. Five Banded Barb

The five banded barb (Pentius Pentazona) as the name suggests has five vertical bars that are dark green to black in color, the first band runs through the eye.  The body color is light gold turning to red on the back and the fins are red. These fish have a gentle nature and are very easy to keep.

The X-ray Tetra (Pristella Maxillaris) gets its unusual name from the fact that the swim bladder and scale line markings are visible, resembling an x-ray, the rest of the body is opaque and the anal and caudal fins are red, the dorsal fin is black, yellow and white.

The Three-Lined Pencilfish (Nannostomus Trifasciatus) has an elongated gold colored body with a black line running from nose to tail and two thinner black lines along side it, with the addition of bright red splashes on all the fins and some on the body which are very eye catching and make attractive additions to any aquarium. When the male reaches maturity their colors are much brighter than the female and they are slimmer is size.
